“...tribal, joyful, genial vibe that demonically possesses the body from the waist down.” – Miami New Times

“With a group this talented, it was just a matter of surrendering – and enjoying.” – Sioux City Journal

One of the hottest of the young Latin bands on the scene today, Grammy-nominated Tiempo Libre is known for their imaginative and high voltage performances, delivering the hard-driving, seductive rhythms of “timba” – an irresistible, dance-inducing mix of Latin jazz and Cuban son. Committed to sharing their musical heritage and injecting a youthful, modern vibe into traditional Cuban music, Tiemp Libre returns to the Dakota on Sunday, January 12.

Cuban natives who were classically trained at the country's top conservatories, the musicians of Tiempo Libre have introduced thousands to Cuban music via the Tonight Show, Live at Lincoln Center and Dancing With the Stars, as well in performances at Tanglewood, New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, Playboy Jazz Festival, Jazz at Lincoln Center and more. Three TL recordings received Grammy nominations - Bach in Havana (Sony Masterworks), Arroz Con Mango (Shanachie) and Lo Que Esperabas (Shanachie); recently they released My Secret Radio (Sony Masterworks) and collaborated with esteemed violinist Joshua Bell on "Para Ti" for his new album, At Home With Friends. They've also enjoyed working with famed flautist James Galway.

Tiempo Libre does not consider their gigs "concerts," but rather as Cuban music parties. In the audience, you might choose to sit back and enjoy the sophisticated music as if in a concert hall, or you might prefer to get up, clap, dance and sing along as if you were on the streets of Havana. However you choose to celebrate Cuba’s musical heritage, you'll be part of the party at the Dakota Jazz Club on Sunday, January 12, 7 pm.

The Dakota is located at 1010 Nicollet Mall in downtown Minneapolis; www.dakotacooks.com. Box office 612-332-5299. Reservations recommended; tickets $28-$35.
