While I confess I am not a devoted "Dancing with the Stars" watcher, the enthusiasm of bandleader Jorge Gomez of Tiempo Libre was infectious when we talked the other day.
Tiempo Libre, a seven-piece Miami band that plays Cuban dance music, is set to appear at the Wisconsin Union Theater on Thursday, Nov. 5. But a week before that, on Oct. 27, the band will play a tune from their latest album on "Dancing with the Stars" on ABC.
"We played conga, not timba on the show," Gomez said, explaining that "it took a month, but ('Dancing with the Stars') finally said yes. It was -- oh my God, I can't believe it!"
On "Dancing" Tiempo Libre played "Tu Conga Bach" from their new album "Bach in Havana." The album takes Bach melodies and gives them a Cuban, dance-able twist.
If you hit up the Tiempo Libre show, head to the newly opened Cardinal on Wilson Street and you'll get in free to a dance party with DJ SalSabor.
Tickets to Tiempo Libre cost $27-30 and $10 for UW-Madison students. They're available at the Wisconsin Union Theater website or by calling the box office, 265-ARTS.
